Through their generous support, the UCCRF has made it possible for researchers to try out novel approaches to cancer treatment and uncover game-changing breakthroughs in the fight against the disease. It has helped fund studies that have increased and improved our knowledge of cancer. Cancer prevention and research have been given a boost in prestige as a result.

The Board of Trustees fosters a culture of philanthropy and promotes all modalities of fundraising to help researchers at Comprehensive Cancer Centers realize their ambitions. Its members include prominent benefactors, representatives from other foundations, and the presidents of UCCRF subsidiary boards.

The board helps the dean of UChicago Medicine and the director of the Cancer Center with key institutional initiatives and recruits, keeps the board strong and active, and promotes the Cancer Center’s visibility locally, regionally, and nationally as a leader in cancer research and patient care.

Since 1978, the University of Chicago has hosted internationally renowned scientists who have made significant contributions to the study of cancer as part of the Simon M. Shubitz Cancer Prize and Lectureship. Simon M. Shubitz, MD, an outstanding alumnus, is being honored with this award in recognition of his selfless work as a physician and his commitment to helping others.

The Comprehensive Cancer Center and the University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation have increased the frequency of the award’s presentation from biannual to annual.
