Sheng Siong Career Salary: Born and raised in Singapore, Sheng Siong Supermarket was founded by the Lim brothers in 1985. (Mr Lim Hock Eng, Mr Lim Hock Chee and Mr Lim Hock Leng). The Lim brothers had been helping out at their father’s pig farm in Punggol before that. Mr Lim Hock Chee and his wife rented a stall at one of the now-defunct supermarket chain stores in Ang Mo Kio (BLK 122 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3) to sell chilled pork because of an over-supply situation.
Just when the couple managed to clear the excess stock, their store owner (the supermarket chain) faced financial difficulties and put up the numerous shops for sale to current tenants or other market players, including the one where the pork stall was owned by Mr. Lim Hock Chee and his wife.
The Lim brothers took the plunge and ventured into the retail industry by taking over the store at BLK 122 with the government phasing out pig farms, and with seed capital from their aunt, Mr. Lim Kim Siong. Today, the original store remains operational, and this is the tale of how Sheng Siong started.
