An image of a mountain lion sleeping in the snow was posted on Twitter by the government department on January 20th, along with the caption: “You’re shivering. They have a coat of pelts. Don’t allow anybody in.” Over 22,000 Twitter users rejected the advice and indicated an interest in touching or owning a mountain lion by sharing the message with their followers.
Wildlife social media coordinator Sarah Southerland told Live Science that she was terrified that people, the Internet as a whole, had simply chosen that they were going to do it regardless of her warnings that people should not touch mountain lions. To create the mountain lion tweet, someone took inspiration from a popular internet meme depicting a mountain lion saying, “If you’re chilly, invite them in.” However, internet users have made parodies for species that aren’t often kept inside, like mountain lions. This slogan is used to persuade domestic pet owners to bring their pets inside during the frigid winter months.
The wildlife agency warned residents not to invite mountain lions inside with a tweet in a lighthearted tone. Users began to dispute in the comments, and the message quickly circulated throughout Twitter. “It was a slow burn, and then once it got up it was a wildfire,” Darrin Hill, a producer for the wildlife department who came up with the initial tweet, told Live Science.
