In May, her family revealed on Instagram that Grumpy Cat, whose true name was “Tardar Sauce,” had died quietly at home from a urinary tract infection. Her death was announced. With her famous scowl, the feline curmudgeon drew in tens of millions of fans on the internet.

Tardar Sauce was born in Morristown, Arizona, on April 4, 2012. Once she debuted on Reddit five months later, she was born into the internet’s consciousness. Within 24 hours, the shot had amassed more than 100,000 upvotes. Suddenly, Tardar Sauce became a huge hit. According to the meme-cataloging website Know Your Meme, grumpy Cat’s first T-shirt line was available barely over a week after her Reddit debut. Hot Topic and Urban Outfitters began selling goods with her sarcastic likeness within a year. Since then, her likeness has appeared on thousands of coffee mugs, bikinis, beverage napkins, and “Nope Book” notebooks. A year later, Grumpy Cat signed an endorsement deal with Friskies, lent her trademark frown and won $710,000 in a lawsuit against the company that created a roasted coffee line without permission, published Grumpy Cat: A Grumpy Book with tips on how to be gruff (“[F]or most it takes a lifetime of practice”), and won several awards, including the Webby’s Meme of the Year “by a landslide.”) Grumpy Cat and her sibling Pokey appeared in a comic book in 2015. She also appeared in Cats on Broadway in 2016. Grumpy Cat merchandise is still available for purchase on the official website.
