Using network science and data science methods to forecast the popularity of Internet memes, we have added our article to a growing body of research that has been published in recent years (Weng et al. 2012; Maji et al. 2018; Tsur and Rappoport 2015; Wang and Wood 2011). We examine the popularity of coronavirus memes using data from Reddit, the world’s biggest social news and entertainment website, which has 129,326 records. It is possible to summarise the most important contributions of this study as follows:

We conduct a content-based study of what makes a meme popular, taking into account numerous characteristics from both text and picture data, using sophisticated machine learning methods (such as convolutional neural networks, gradient boosting, and random forest).

We distinguish ourselves from previous writers by examining whether the success of a meme can be predicted only on the basis of its content, without taking into consideration social network variables.

We not only investigate what causes a meme to become viral, but we also investigate the additional predictive value that image-related characteristics have over textual characteristics in predicting the popularity of viral memes.
