River phoenix parents: Rain Phoenix was raised by hippies and, like her brothers River and Joaquin, has established a name for herself in the entertainment industry via acting and singing. She tells the story of their unique upbringing. Few individuals can claim to have been busking on the streets of their hometown when they were three years old. Or the fact that they signed with their first agency when they were five years old and performed in the Hollywood Bowl with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young by the time they were six years old. However, hardly any individuals can claim to be descended from a family as distinguished as Rain Phoenix’s.

With her position as the oldest daughter of the Phoenix family, Rain Phoenix, 38, finds herself wedged between two of Hollywood’s most recognizable young stars. Two years her senior, River Phoenix, the adolescent idol and Hollywood darling who died of a drug overdose when he was just 23, was two years her junior, and Joaquin is two years younger than River. There are also two sisters, Summer, and Liberty, who play a role in the story.

When Joaquin, an executive producer on Kossakovksy’s documentary about farm animals, “Gunda,” was unable to attend the festival on September 27, the festival organized a substitute. However, one of the younger Phoenix’s defining characteristics has always been his desire to maintain his solitude.

The words of a screenwriter who has worked with him for a long time: “He’s one of the most passionate and finest performers of his age.” He despises interviews and media, has a tiny close-knit circle of friends, seldom goes out, and does not even like rehearsing with other actors, which is ironic considering his role as Joan. In fact, many of his co-stars never get to meet him at all! I believe he takes pleasure in being a mystery. Even to himself, he remains a mystery.”

With names like these, it should come as no surprise that the Phoenix parents were both genuine flower-in-their-hair hippies in their younger years. Rain’s middle name is Joan of Arc, after the French heroine. “I feel privileged that they selected me to receive it,” she adds. “Sometimes, just knowing that’s my name has been a source of comfort.”

Their mother, Arlyn, was born in the Bronx to Russian-Jewish parents who had immigrated to the United States as children. In the late 1960s, she became aware of the counter-culture movement that was sweeping throughout the United States, and she embarked on a journey of exploration. While she was traveling in northern California, she was picked up by a young composer named John Bottom, who took her to his home. Within a year, the two were united in marriage.

The pair embodied the archetype of the flower kid. They joined a religious group known as the Children of God in 1973, shortly after River and Rain were born, and worked as missionaries for them while also harvesting fruit and doing odd jobs to supplement their income. It was a laid-back, free-spirited, hippy-style way of living. Each of their children was born in a different American state (Rain was born in Texas), and they spent a large portion of their early lives traveling. “Traveling was a significant part of my upbringing, and it is something that I cherish much,” adds Rain. “As an adult, I can’t help but feel like a bit of a nomad in certain ways, which is understandable. If I’m in one location for more than three months, I start to get restless.”

When their fifth kid was born in 1979, things took a somewhat different turn for the worst for the couple. Arlyn and John chose the surname Phoenix instead of the more common Bottom because it conjures up images of a mythical bird emerging from the ashes, which they found appealing. They relocated to Los Angeles, where Arlyn obtained employment as a secretary for a casting agent at NBC, putting her right in the thick of the competitive Hollywood talent pool, and they started out on a journey that would see their children become Hollywood stars.
