Your annual spending on Delta flights and many partner flights will determine how many MQDs you earn. MQDs are determined by a combination of the fare class and the percentage of the total distance traveled.

To what extent does the MQD Waiver protect me?

By meeting the MQD Waiver, you can avoid having to make MQDs.

Spending $25,000 or more on your eligible Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express in a calendar year will qualify you for the MQD Waiver, allowing you to earn Platinum, Gold, or Silver Medallion Status.

Spending $250,000 or more on your eligible Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express in a calendar year will earn you Diamond Medallion status and a MQD Waiver.

U.S.-based Members can achieve Medallion Status by accumulating a certain number of qualifying miles flown and spending with Delta and our partners each calendar year. Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) and Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs) are the units of flight time used to track completion of the flying requirements (MQSs). Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) and the Medallion Qualification Dollar Waiver are used to track how close you are to meeting the spending requirements.

It’s common knowledge that becoming a Delta elite member isn’t cheap. In fact, you need to earn $15,000 in Medallion Qualification Dollars in addition to flying 125,000 qualifying miles or completing 140 qualifying segments to reach Diamond Medallion status, the highest tier attainable. Furthermore, this will increase to $20,000 in the 2024 status year.

To maintain your Diamond Medallion status with Delta Air Lines, you must spend $15,000 on the airline this year ($1 = 1 MQD, minus taxes). But if you maximize your MQD earnings on Delta’s partners, you can easily rack up 15,000 MQDs for less than $7,500 in travel expenses.

Earning MQDs as a SkyMiles member is dependent on the fare class and flight distance taken. Thus, depending on the length of the flight, a $1,000 long-haul business-class ticket booked directly with KLM could earn 2,000 MQDs or more.
