The relationship between music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs and singer Cassie Ventura (who goes by her first name) seemed to be one of the most promising in Hollywood for over ten years. Unfortunately, the fairytale romance between these two powerful people died out behind closed doors. According to E!, the A-list couple finally made their on-again, off-again relationship Instagram official in 2012. Red carpet appearances and photos from lavish trips to places like Mexico, Ibiza, and France, all of which showed Diddy and Cassie grinning from ear to ear, helped make them instant celebrities (cue a chorus of “awws”).
However, there has been a snag in this long-term relationship. Cassie told Vibe Vixen (through Madame Noire) that “honesty and communication” are the two key components vital to “maintaining any relationship,” but it seemed like the couple lacked both (but more on all of that below). Fans were shocked when Diddy and Cassie finally split up in 2018.
Billboard reports that Diddy and Cassie confirmed their relationship in 2012, five years after rumours of their dating surfaced in 2007. This was shortly after the singer/model had signed with the rapper’s record label, Bad Boy Records. Not long after, adoring fans and media outlets began calling “C Diddy” the definition of #RelationshipGoals.
Cassie made a surprising remark about the celebrity romance in an interview with Vibe Vixen (via Madame Noire) in October 2013, despite the fact that the new couple continued to keep their relationship relatively private. The simple act of being in his presence, she said, was awe-inspiring. In the meantime, Diddy kept his new flame front and centre by featuring her in several of his recent projects. In 2015, the “Must Be Love” hitmakers made headlines with a super sexy (and NSFW) commercial for Diddy’s perfume, 3AM by Sean John. This was in addition to Diddy producing her unreleased sophomore album and having Cassie model for his Cîroc advertisements. The business tycoon told Style.com, “That whole interaction has nothing to do with sex as much as it has to do with love” (via Latina). A key tenet of my worldview is that “love is the new sexy.”
During the middle of the 2010s, the couple became widely known for using the rapper’s private plane to travel to exotic locations for romantic getaways, including exotic beach vacations and trips to Europe.
In 2012, after Diddy and Cassie made their relationship Instagram official, speculation began circulating that the two were engaged.
According to E!, after Cassie posted a Twitter photo of her freshly manicured hands, sparking with a “large sparkler on her ring finger,” rumours quickly spread that the two were engaged.
Oops.
In February 2014, however, the Bad Boy Records founder posted an Instagram photo of a massive diamond ring he had bought Cassie, leading fans to believe the A-list couple were getting back together. “Is it okay, baby? All I want to do is make sure you get what you want. Hey, I’m just trying to make you happy, so #takeDat “He tagged the photo. Glamour claims that the singer posted an Instagram photo of herself that day wearing the same piece of jewellery, prompting speculation about its origin.
Taking their relationship to the next level: were Diddy and Cassie doing it? Ok, so maybe not. An E! report states that Cassie “denied the engagement claims” on Twitter. E! noted that “it looks like the bling was just a (very expensive and lavish) gift and nothing more” while Diddy’s rep told the outlet that the rumours were “not true.”
