Next year marks the 20th anniversary of AFI’s album Sing The Sorrow, which will be commemorated with a live performance of the entire album. On March 11, the band will play at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California. The album will be performed in its entirety for the first and last time, as stated in the show’s promotional trailer. Special guests Jawbreaker, Chelsea Wolfe, and Choir Boy will be performing with them.

Like blink-182’s Jerry Finn-produced, Robert Smith-featuring untitled album would a few months later, they had mastered mosh parts as well as weepy balladry and the kind of pure pop songs that helped fully position Robert Smith as a key influence on modern punk. Sing the Sorrow elevated AFI from genuine punks to a band on par with anyone on MTV, much like blink-182’s Jerry Finn era albums did for that band. And AFI accomplished this not by watering down their sound but by broadening it.

Even if purists of the punk genre found fault with Sing the Sorrow, anyone who enjoys it when rock bands make bold statements must concede that it was a success. It drew inspiration from a wide variety of sources, including The Cure, Joy Division, Nine Inch Nails, Misfits, Black Flag, Slayer, Metallica, and Tim Burton, and successfully fused these disparate elements in a way that had never been done before and was rarely done successfully again. This isn’t AFI at their most punk, but it’s definitely AFI at their most radically fresh.
