Chazelle and Justin Hurwitz came up with the idea for the film when they were both students at Harvard University. Chazelle was a fan of musicals during his time as a drummer, and the two came up with the concept for the film together. In 2010, after relocating to Los Angeles, Chazelle began writing the script, but was unable to find a studio prepared to fund the project without making significant modifications to his concept. Following the success of his 2014 picture Whiplash, Summit Entertainment acquired the rights to produce the picture for distribution. Although Miles Teller and Emma Watson were initially cast, they both decided not to participate, and Gosling and Stone were chosen in their place. The film’s music was written by Hurwitz, while the dance choreography was created by Mandy Moore. The film was shot in Los Angeles from August to September of 2015.

However, “La La Land” isn’t simply a throwback to the past. It’s a modernised rendition of a huge Tinseltown classic, and it’s very good. Jacques Demy meets “New York, New York” meets postmodern indie backlot fury in this homage to Old Hollywood. Despite the fact that it is a big Los Angeles epic that has “popular” themes, it is also a delicate and individual trip that is nearly completely unexpected. In fact, you won’t know where it’s heading until half an hour before the show finishes.) It’s Boy Meets Girl meets the fragile freedom of 21st-century love in this adaptation of the classic film. A romantic comedy, it also explores what it takes to be an artist in today’s society, which may or may not value creativity anymore.

I enjoyed “La La Land” a great deal the first time I watched it, but I must admit that it wasn’t until I watched it a second time that I fell head over heels in love with it. In the case of some films, this is just how things work; even a fantastic film may become even more effective on the second viewing. The following are a few observations on why Damien Chazelle’s picture, for all of its swoon-inducing surface, is a picture whose very ecstasy is elusive and off-center.

Once you’ve hooked onto it, the ecstasy seems to be even more intense as a result of its off-centeredness.) La La Land is more than simply a stylised nostalgia trip full of champagne montages and harmonizing hearts; it is a cinematic experience. It’s the trinity of filmmaking — it captures the attention of the heart, the sight, and the intellect. And once it gets a hold of you, it just gets better from there. Here’s why — but please keep in mind that I won’t be able to speak about “La La Land” without giving away some of its most important plot points, so if you want to watch the movie without being spoiled, don’t continue reading.
